Smart Building Industry Awards

Excellence in prefabricated building - Infrastructure

Winner: Sydney International Speedway by Fleetwood Australia

What was the conceptual framework of the project?

The Sydney International Speedway project aimed to create a state-of-the-art facility capable of hosting major state, national, and international speedway events. The primary goal was to relocate the car racing track from older premises to a new, purpose-built site. Key design principles included functionality, accessibility, and integration with existing site structures.

Fleetwood was engaged by Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure, who held the principal contract with the government client Sydney Metro. Abergeldie supplied the steel structure, while Fleetwood utilised modular construction to deliver high-standard specifications. The architecturally designed buildings are accessibility compliant, featuring lifts, stairways, and seating. The corporate boxes were specifically designed with floor-to-ceiling windows, providing an optimal viewing experience for spectators.

Despite facing unprecedented challenges such as one of the wettest years on record, COVID-19 restrictions, labor shortages, and supply delays, the project team innovated to deliver a diverse range of complex buildings. Significant stakeholder collaboration was crucial to achieving desired outcomes in line with Sydney Metro’s final specifications. The use of offsite modular construction allowed for rapid and efficient project delivery, minimising on-site disruptions and ensuring high-quality finishes. Materials and finishes were optimised to meet project requirements and budget constraints while ensuring compliance with the National Construction Code’s high benchmark standards. This project reflects Sydney Metro’s commitment to creating a world-class speedway facility that supports local industry and jobs.

How does the project showcase the practice of prefabrication/smart building?

The Sydney International Speedway project exemplifies the advantages of prefabrication through its innovative design and construction process. Fleetwood used volumetric modular construction to fabricate components offsite in a controlled environment, ensuring high precision and quality. This significantly reduced on-site construction time and minimised disruptions, crucial given the challenging conditions.

Innovative solutions addressed challenges such as extreme wet weather and COVID-19 restrictions. The modular approach enabled efficient resource and labour use, mitigating the impact of labour shortages and supply delays. The buildings are fully insulated and feature energy-efficient HVAC systems, motion sensors for lighting control, and high-end finishes for durability and thermal efficiency.

Materials and finishes were selected to meet project specifications and budget constraints, ensuring compliance with the National Construction Code’s high standards. The project demonstrated modular construction's effectiveness in delivering high-quality, cost-effective infrastructure solutions, supporting local industry and jobs during the pandemic. Smart building practices further enhanced functionality and sustainability.
