New Modular Learning Spaces for Canberra
by Sarah Backhouse, PrefabAUS
Last weekend, PrefabAUS was delighted to witness the installation of 10 modules to create 7 new 21C learning spaces at Duffy Primary School, Canberra
The safety of the construction method meant that members of the school community, the ACT Minister for Education, and NBRS + Partners could spend a sunny Saturday watching the ease with which the building came together. The modules came complete with beautiful decorative screens that provide out of hours enclosure to external deck areas, and south facing clerestory windows provide a consistent level of daylight within the interior.
This project advances ideas for next generation modular learning environments explored by NBRS + Partners – developed in collaboration with Unitised Building by Hickory – in their prize winning submission for the Future Proofing Schools Design Ideas Competition. To see these ideas become built form was particularly satisfying as this Duffy Primary School Project and PrefabAUS were both born out of the ARC Grant Future Proofing Schools. Such a well received outcome demonstrates how conversations between industry and research organisations can lead to positive outcomes for all involved.
