Better Buildings and Better Bottom Lines - Brisbane workshop

prefabAUS and the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre (AMGC) invite industry members to a workshop focused on the future of building, business model innovation and the impact that industrialisation and digitalisation can have on the industry.

As the building industry accelerates toward a more industrialised and digital future, questions arise about how the industry will implement these changes and what the impact will be on the industry’s current business models and the structure of its future value chain.

The growth of prefabrication and offsite construction in Australia and globally is challenging the traditional business models within the construction industry. The materials, methodologies and techniques that deliver our built environment are evolving in a more industrialised and digitally-enabled manner, but the underlying business models and value chains have not kept pace.

With market share expected to grow in Australia from five percent to 15 percent in the next three years, businesses must be ready to scale up to realise the opportunity and be relevant in a global construction market or risk losing out to international players.

Industrialisation, through prefab, offsite and other advanced manufacturing techniques, can support this goal.




Workshop Objectives:

The workshop aims are divided into two interconnected parts:

1. To work with industry players to identify how they can take advantage of the twin currents of industrialisation and digitalisation.

2. To further explore the role that business model and value chain innovation holds for the future industry.

Speakers

Damien Crough, Executive Chair, prefabAUS

Damien is a founding Director and Executive Chair of prefabAUS – the peak industry body for offsite construction in Australia. In 2007 Damien began working with renowned Australian architect Nonda Katsalidis and Hickory Group to develop and bring to market the prefabricated Unitised BuildingTM system. Damien’s skills, knowledge and experience with the UBTM System were used to grow and develop the business in Australia.

As Managing Director of Advanced Offsite Group, Damien has been involved a range of medium to high density modular housing projects. Damien works with a number of universities and research bodies to explore advanced manufacturing technologies and collaborates with government and industry bodies to advance offsite construction. Damien sees strong opportunities for the prefabrication industry to set itself apart by providing low waste, high quality, sustainable and design led alternatives.



Ben Kehoe, Strategy Consultant

Ben Kehoe has worked for four decades at the coal face of Australian business as a social pioneer, storyteller, change agent, management consultant and business owner. His real work is working with business leaders to “make stuff happen”. 

He has worked with over 250 Australian businesses from ASX listed companies, private companies to start -ups. His primary work has been in the area of strategy (Creating the Future). He has spent approx. 20,000 hours over 40 years in strategic conversations with Australian business leaders about the future of Australian business. Many of those conversations have focussed on Innovation in Australia.

Ben has chaired numerous Business Advisory Boards and has had roles in the Governance of Rugby (ARU &QRU). In a moment of eccentricity with his wife, Sally, a great mate and supporter, he owned an Art Gallery. He has also been a Syndicate leader with the CEO Institute for over 10 years.

Ben is a husband, father and grandfather, a student of business and life, a jogger, skier, art collector and ballroom dancer. Over the last decade, he has been exploring social media and its impact on business and the world at large and that’s how he came to write a book!


Lance Worrall, Industry-development Specialist

Lance Worrall is a political economist and economic and industry-development specialist. Recently he has authored major analyses and reports focussed on the case for a national Australian industrial policy, building Australian sovereign capability and supply chain resilience, strategic public procurement, the Circular Economy, Industry 4.0 and naval shipbuilding, and the case for a shorter statutory working week.

He is keenly interested in Australia’s potential to reindustrialise through (and not in spite of) the decarbonisation of its economy.

From 2016 to 2020 Lance was Director, Industrial Transformation, for the Innovative Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre (IMCRC), which included work on the development of ‘futuremap’, a diagnostic tool enabling manufacturers to assess their current digital maturity and set strategic directions for improvement.

Between 2013 and 2015 he worked on design and advocacy for establishment of the IMCRC, and on economic development projects focused on industry diversification and ‘new manufacturing’.

From 2008 to 2012, in various Chief Executive and Deputy Chief Executive roles, he led development of the South Australia's Manufacturing Strategy and Engagement Strategies for India and China, initiatives to leverage manufacturing opportunities from the mining expansion, the development of Tonsley Park as an integrated education and advanced manufacturing precinct, etc., as well as development of whole of government performance and leadership frameworks.


Michael Grogan, State Director – Victoria and Tasmania, National Director Skills and Training, Australian Manufacturing Growth Centre (AMGC)

Michael commenced as State Director, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania in May 2016, and is based near Melbourne. Michael joined AMGC having led Sutton Tools for almost two decades as CEO. Under his leadership, Sutton Tools employed 350 workers across three locations in Victoria. In addition, he managed manufacturing facilities and operational outlets in New Zealand, Singapore and Europe. Michael launched successful joint ventures in India and the Netherlands and boosted the company’s revenue through extending its sales reach in international markets including the USA and China. In addition, Michael champions skill development and collaboration across the VET and Tertiary education sectors and is active in training packages development.



Eddie Pallotta, Operations Director, SYNC (Hickory Group) 

Mechanical and metallurgical engineer Eddie Pallotta has been with the Hickory Group since 2010, joining us after excelling in the automotive industry in both Australia and internationally for General Motors. Combining technical knowledge that spans mechanical design, manufacturing, material selection, welding and corrosion with a broad range of management and people skills, Eddie has been an important part of the Group; improving process and design on both the conventional construction and prefabricated sides of the business. 

Whilst working for Hickory’s prefabricated construction business Eddie was able to implement strong manufacturing process controls and methodologies to improve quality and delivery. In 2012, Eddie was appointed General Manager of Hickory’s new prefabricated bathroom business, SYNC Bathroom Pods. His broad technical knowledge, strong communication skills, business acumen and project leadership have been an integral part of building this business from the ground up.


Vikram Sachdeva, Advanced Manufacturing Industry 4.0 Hub Manager, Swinburne University of Technology

Vikram Sachdeva brings 25 years of experience in the manufacturing space spanning operations, industrial engineering, continuous improvement, and digital transformation. He defines and executes strategies that equip businesses for the future. A trained engineer and a natural problem solver, he uses Lean Six Sigma and Industry 4.0 to create process, people and technology solutions that address both ingrained and evolving manufacturing challenges. In his current role, he manages Advanced Manufacturing Industry 4.0 Hub at Swinburne University, supporting small & medium manufacturing organisations with digital transformation. Elevated by recent experience at the leading edge of Industry 4.0 technologies, he provides businesses with a fresh forward-looking perspective on the opportunities for digitisation, improvement and growth.




Vince Lorefice, Lean Industry 4.0 Consultant, Swinburne University of Technology

Utilising 22 years of mechanical/industrial automotive engineering experience and 5 years of consulting experience Vince has been helping manufacturing businesses improve their business practices and guide their digital technology adoption and utilisation. Experience in Toyota automotive manufacturing and logistics facilities, Lean fundamentals, a specialty in plant layout, process and value stream design, and entrepreneurial business thinking helps to empathise with manufacturers and guides the creation and implementation of smart business practices and sensible holistic solutions enhanced with digital technologies to improve productivity and efficiency and achieve strategic business outcomes.

Pete Morrison, Director, Green Timber Technologies

Pete is passionate about Modern Methods of Construction specialised focused solutions that will help drive change in a stagnating sector. Pete has a vast knowledge of Offsite construction and what changes need to be driven across the market to encourage the quick adoption needed to reduce waste and impacts on the environment.

With key knowledge of this new industry, Pete is excited to take an active role in growing this market and approach to delivery. Pete previously held the role of Program Director, Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) within NSW Government. Pete established the standardised approaches for MMC projects to adopt and the NSW MMC Pre-Qualification Scheme which was established to stimulate this new market and improve quality, speed, cost and time for the success of projects.
