BlueScope and Rio Tinto sign MOU for low-emissions steelmaking at PKSW - BlueScope Corporate
BlueScope and Rio Tinto have joined forces to explore options for low-emissions steelmaking at Port Kembla Steelworks in New South Wales. The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to research and design low-emissions processes and technologies for the steel value chain across iron ore processing, iron and steelmaking and related technologies.
Woods Bagot designs prefab high school for Sydney
The first designs have been unveiled for a new high school that will be built on a former intertidal mudflat area in Western Sydney. Designed by Woods Bagot, the Sydney Olympic Park high school will sit on Wangal land towards the northern tip of Wentworth Point, on the southern bank of the Parramatta River. It will be delivered in two stages, the first catering to 850 students and the second expanding the student body to 1,530. Classrooms will be accommodated within a single six-storey building while a hall for sport and performance is proposed to the north of the site.

Miles backs Wellcamp quarantine hub while feds flag scaled-back Pinkenba facility
Queensland Deputy Premier Steven Miles has defended his government’s backing of a privately built quarantine hub near Toowoomba, while the Commonwealth has flagged scaled-back plans for its Pinkenba facility as COVID-19 quarantine rules relax. Just as the state government announced on Tuesday that the first accommodation had been built near Toowoomba’s Wellcamp Airport, the federal government released artists’ images of its Brisbane hub.
Let’s Get Serious About Embodied Carbon
Australia is missing a major opportunity in the renewable space as our governments remain more concerned about keeping votes than implementing meaningful change to reduce our CO2 emissions. The construction industry is a huge contributor to emissions in this country with embodied carbon making up 16 per cent of Australia’s built environment emissions according to a recent Green Building Council of Australia report. The Embodied Carbon & Embodied Energy in Australia’s Buildings report findings state without intervention this share will balloon to 85 per cent in 2050 at a time when Australia must achieve net zero emissions in line with the Paris Agreement.
